Combine the following ingredients:

 4-5 cups of Flour (I’ve been using King Arthur Flour’s Bread Flour—because I like to support this employee owned company locally based in Norwich, Vermont)

4 Eggs (cage-free or local)

1/2 cup of Oil (Olive or any other nut based oil is preferred by me)

1/3 cup of Sweetner (Honey, Maple Syrup, or Agave)

Mix together and then knead on floured surface for about 6 minutes.

Put back in Bowl and slightly oil the dough, then cover with cloth and let rise in a warm place for a hour.

Knead dough again on slightly floured surface for 4 minutes. Section into two, then into three pieces.  This recipe makes two loaves, so braid the three sections into a loaf.  Then cover with cloth and let rise in a warm place for another hour.

Mix 1 egg with a tablespoon of cold H2O. Brush (or rub with hands) this on the top of the loaves. Then make a seasoning to sprinkle and rub on. I’ve used the following combinations: rosemary (plucked from my plant growing in my kitchen) and honey; almonds, lavender, and yarrow (all ground in a coffee grinder), mustard seeds, oats and cinnamon.

Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

This recipe can also be used for making pizza. Just take the two sections and form into two thin pizzas. Lightly oil, spread on some red sauce, meat, cheese, garlic and bake using the same directions as above.

Bringing the War Home

I’d like to pay tribute to a man, whose spirit gave me hope and inspiration to live my life with freedom and guts.

My last visual representation of my uncle comes from this past summer, when I picked him up at the airport in Connecticut. He flew in from Montana later than anticipated due to him slightly missing his scheduled flight. If you know my uncle Harlan, you will understand what this “slightly” emphasis means to him missing his flight. He tried to bring with him a gift for my Uncle, who is a hunter, so thereby foretelling the hang up at the airport. I remember how he walked up to the car happily and with that long legged stride and follow through exuberated by his walk in life. His suitcase was from the 70′s, brown and rugged with stickers to match its and his own uniqueness.  He never lost his zeal of remaining true to who he was in this moment of time and space on earth.

My uncle was a cowboy, through and through. What I mean by this description is that he did as he thought right and never tried purposefully to hurt anyone in the process, but perhaps himself.
